Local boats I like 2 the Classy A Class Cat

My first thought was the boat is on the trailer upside down, but the trampoline is on top. What is this boat? Like all shiny things I had to take a closer look. The other thing was the name on the boat, "Armington." I knew that name, but I had never seen it associated with a sailboat.

This is an "A Class" racing catamaran with a wave piercing bow designed by naval architect O. H. Rodgers who also provided the tooling. According to the IACA (International A Cat Assoc.) these are the "fastest single handed racing boats in the world." A Class racing catamarans are a "Box Rules" developmental sailboat. The basic configuration is simple. The boats must weigh at least 165 lbs (75kg) (which this one weighs), have a maximum length of 18' (5.49m), and width of 7.5' (2.3m). The sail area can't exceed 150 sq ft (13.94 sq m).

Like all things in life, the details of the rules impose some additional restrictions. Other than that, have at the design, and materials you make it out of. For the time being there are no hydrofoils allowed yet but some forms of lifting structures appear possible by modifying the rudders.

This is one of two nearly identical boats built by Sam Armington, and Jeremy Herrin with some technical help from their boat building dads. The dad's provided maybe a bit, or more likely a lot of their sweat also. Gary Armington was founder of Talon power boats, and Felix Herrin was Catman Cats, a builder of large custom power catamarans, Both provided the experience needed to build these custom composite vessels.

Carbon fiber and epoxy are the materials of choice for these rockets with sails. Gary (right) and Felix (left) are lending their expertise by laying the core into the hull.

These two boats were not a casual build project. It took a year to build the twin crafts, and working with carbon fiber is not a snap. Add to this the endless hours fairing, (meaning sanding) to get the desired perfection.

I would say this type of project is akin to scratch building a composite aircraft fuselage from molds, and the finished quality is at that standard. It's worth it. A new world class A Cat could easily cost $20,000 or more. That's about $1100 per foot. That's a lot of incentive to build it yourself, if you have the skills.

You can tell a lot about the quality of construction by looking at the interior, and to me this is as beautiful as the sleek exterior. Precisely fitted bulkheads and no excess gunk and blobs hang off the surfaces. This is professional work.

The mast weighs almost nothing. That's a bit of an exaggeration, but I could have picked it up with one hand if I knew where the center of gravity was. This is a critical part of the craft, and I didn't want to be the one who broke it. Sam Armington, holding the carbon fiber structure in the photo knows where that magic point is.

Sam's boat was at Gary's shop when I saw it to be fitted with a new trailer. The one you see it sitting on is not ideal, and there are concerns it will damage the very light weight hulls. The new was custom made by Sam's dad, will support the craft from the structural beams instead of the hulls.

If you look closely at the pictures on the Armington/Herrin blog, you can see there are some small individual differences between the way the two vessels were rigged, and equipped. I think the sailing team of Sam, and Jermey, in a friendly way want to beat each other on any given day. Exquisite work, gorgeous boats, and very talented young sailors, and dads.

The picture of Gary Armington, and Felix Herrin is from the Armington/Herrin blog site.

Link love Do I look like a cheap date

Every few years for some unknown nostalgic reason I think I like spam, and I buy some. It gets cooked with Don Ho singing Tiny Bubbles with his ukulele in the background. But like that extruded McRib thing that appears every now and then. I'm always disappointed. I too can get sucked into that "An ounce of image exceeds a pound of performance thing." But for sure I don't like the taste of comment spam.

In the beginning I just put up with it. My email tells me I have a comment. I look at it, and if it's comment spam I just dump it, until one day I saw this on the Rant.

Thesis WritingGreat blog very nice information i really like your post. Your article its so amazing. After reading your blog i am very helpful & i really thanks full your. Keep blogging.

The link in red, now disabled here takes you to a company that sells essays. Now that's quite an ad for writing services they left on my site. Was English the third, or forth language of the writer? In a fit of pique, and bemusement I left it there and followed up with some snide remarks. In later times, I have changed my mind, and the Rant is now providing a public service.

How most of this works is someone, somewhere in the world signs up for a free Google account to make some sort of income leaving comment spam. Local website companies sell the "I can make your website appear at the top of Google's search results, for only this amount of money. Trust us, we know how Google works, we are SEO (Search Engine Optimization) experts." They go overseas and contract with these people to leave comment spam links on websites.

In the old buggy whip days of the internet, the more links your site had, the better your search result rankings were but no more, sort of. Website links still play a role in rankings, but not all links are created equal. In sum dumping links to your website, onto lots of other websites doesn't raise a websites page rank. In the case of comment spam links, it doesn't work at all on most websites.

My little public service started with a comment spam posting for a maritime attorney. This was a big law firm. I looked at their site, and it was one of the worst websites I had ever seen, and certainly lacked the gravitas I would expect from a successful law firm. As if that wasn't bad enough, there was a horrifically written fake blog on it, that I hoped wasn't written by an real attorney, followed by made up comments glorifying the posts using their less than erudite writing skills. Ay caramba! This firm can't know their site looks like this can they? And they didn't. An outside contractor was doing it for them. They got my first email. This is an example of a more current one to give you a feel for them.

Why are you paying a company to spam my website?

Most likely you don't know this is happening, and why you are receiving this. You are likely and inadvertently, I hope, paying someone to leave comment spam my website. There is also another scenario where website developers pay to have this done, so they can say, "look at all the links to your site, and my what a good job I have done in promoting the website I created for you." In either case this is bad for you, and wastes my time to remove it.

Here is your spam comment on my site:

Harry Roads has left a new comment on your post.

We have one on our cabin; we decide on it because it’s suitable as a cooling system due to its portability and efficiency. Moreover, it is cheap and needs no hassle for installation. It’s perfectly convenient and perfect for a cool getaway.

Harry Roads (This is the link back to their website disguised as a name)

On my site Google, and most others automatically add this statement in the sites HTML code to comments left behind. Here is yours from my website:

href="http://Bobsheatingandcooling.com"; rel="nofollow">Harry Roads</a>

The "rel="nofollow" part of this tells Google's web crawlers not to index your link. So placing it there does not improve your web (SEO) ranking at all, so why are you paying for it?

And while I'm the subject have you actually read your fake blog? Seriously? Really? Try your Tankless Hot water Heater blog entry on the first page. "Tankles how water heater break down easy or are un reliably.  You should be embarrassed. This crap hurts you more than it helps you. Lose this blog ASAP, and your web support company at the same time. Real professionals know this stuff doesn't work. I've been thinking about doing a story about comment spam, you don't want to be the example. This public service has been provided by The Marine Installers Rant. Questions? Call me 555-555-5555

I know these aren't pretty emails. They are meant to be a wake up call, and have the owners really look closely at their websites, and providers. I only send them if I think the site owner isn't aware of what's happening, and I have been on the money every time.  Links to buy gold dust from India and the ilk just go bye bye. I have been have been told over a dozen SEO/website service companies have been fired for doing it. It took the attorney only two hours to fire their website firm, and hire a new one. They have a very nice site now.

Real professionals can improve a sites page ranking, but like all things in life it takes work. Nothing beats good content that is regularly updated, and good reciprocal links. Yeah, I know I've been a bit off topic lately, but lots of things are in the hopper being finished. Fusion kit update, flying boats, playing with PuTTy, Actisense savior, I think, and more.

Druma looking at the sea in Hout Bay

Druma  (drumbeat charters) came to us around ten years back, he has been a regular crew member when sailing ever since.

Always fascinated  by the local sea life, which in the Hout Bay and Chapmans Bay area near Cape Town, South Africa is plentiful.

What's out there?

Well you will always see Seals but often Dolphins, Sunfish and Whales, Sharks are out there too but we have yet to see one!

Jean passes the snacks to Druma.

Looks like fun!

It was, we loved you Druma.

Why didnt I think of that Outboard lower unit salvation

I have always wondered why, at some subliminal level, when you tip back a modern outboard motor, a little bit of the lower unit always remains in the water. Maybe the reason for this is to insure that one of the most vulnerable portions of the motor stays in contact with the salt water to insure galvanic corrosion will occur, and hence new parts will be needed. Or maybe there are unknown mechanical reasons why the motor can't be lifted that last six inches or so to clear the water. I mean we went to the moon didn't we? So I was most surprised when I encountered two boats next to each other, one with this nifty little box under the lower units, and one without the little box.

The box is made out of fiber glassed Nida-Core type plastic honeycomb panels, and painted, or gel coated white. Its light, and it floats. There is a line that attaches it to the dock to keep it from going on a walkabout. You can see in the picture above that there is no evidence of corrosion or marine growth, and the little bit of bottom paint on the lower units is just there for when the boat is away from home dock. When it's inserted under the drives, a little bit of water gets into the box, but it quickly evaporates, along with any rainwater. So in short, the little box electrically isolates the lower unit from the seawater stopping, or certainly slowing any galvanic corrosion, and it stops marine growth from getting a grip on the lower unit.

Now lets just take a quick look at the boat that is right next door. It also has bottom paint on it, at least of some vintage, but check out that ZZ Top style marine growth beard it's sporting, and there is some corrosion evident on the skeg. I'm also sure the pitot tube opening is thoroughly plugged up. The boat with the little box is owned by Jim Gillespie, and it was a great idea Jim. You motor builders should figure out a way to lift those motors just a little higher, and you would sell less parts damaged by corrosion, oops is that a disincentive?

A small author's postscript to the story.

After reading some comments on some of the forums, I spoke to Jim again about the little box. He does try to keep it pumped out, although he does not worry as much about it having fresh water in it. The box has been in place for about four years now, and there was a 110 volt pump that had its hose attached to the box, but it has broken, and has not yet been replaced. If there is a lot of rain, a manual pump is used to lower the water level in the box. As mentioned by others, there is a zinc on the motor mount, but having the lower unit out of the water reduces the opportunity for galvanic corrosion that is so commonly seen on many outboard motor skegs. Many thanks to the C-Brats forum users for their insightful thoughts and comments. Bill
