Many mornings, I wake up and taking my cup of coffee, I sit in the quiet and look at what I call "the dream book". The book has detailed descriptions of fur trade routes and locations throughout North America and while many of the places are now inside of cities, most are not and most are so remote that no city will ever be built nearby. Most of the places are dreams.
Some days in my canoe, I am the voyageur, a member of the coureurs de bois, heading into the north woods of my smallest of wildernesses. I do this because I can and because age is no reason to stop dreaming.

Today, my farthest north is Yesler Creek, where the beaver lodge is so covered in new vegetation that few others would even guess that it was there. A falcon flies past, very high overhead. I've never seen one so high above and I notice the long body, the long body that gives it stability when it dives after prey.

Every few years for some unknown nostalgic reason I think I like spam, and I buy some. It gets cooked with Don Ho singing Tiny Bubbles with his ukulele in the background. But like that extruded McRib thing that appears every now and then. I'm always disappointed. I too can get sucked into that "An ounce of image exceeds a pound of performance thing." But for sure I don't like the taste of comment spam.
In the beginning I just put up with it. My email tells me I have a comment. I look at it, and if it's comment spam I just dump it, until one day I saw this on the Rant.

How most of this works is someone, somewhere in the world signs up for a free Google account to make some sort of income leaving comment spam. Local website companies sell the "I can make your website appear at the top of Google's search results, for only this amount of money. Trust us, we know how Google works, we are SEO (Search Engine Optimization) experts." They go overseas and contract with these people to leave comment spam links on websites.
In the old buggy whip days of the internet, the more links your site had, the better your search result rankings were but no more, sort of. Website links still play a role in rankings, but not all links are created equal. In sum dumping links to your website, onto lots of other websites doesn't raise a websites page rank. In the case of comment spam links, it doesn't work at all on most websites.
My little public service started with a comment spam posting for a maritime attorney. This was a big law firm. I looked at their site, and it was one of the worst websites I had ever seen, and certainly lacked the gravitas I would expect from a successful law firm. As if that wasn't bad enough, there was a horrifically written fake blog on it, that I hoped wasn't written by an real attorney, followed by made up comments glorifying the posts using their less than erudite writing skills. Ay caramba! This firm can't know their site looks like this can they? And they didn't. An outside contractor was doing it for them. They got my first email. This is an example of a more current one to give you a feel for them.

Blue tape and a piece of paper What else do you need

Let's just leave it with no one asks me if I have any Grey Poupon mustard while I'm driving around town in it. Overhead is my bitter enemy so I'm reluctant to send it to hospice until I have to.
Lets get back to the blue tape stuff. I rarely use it for it's intended purpose and instead apply it to a myriad other uses and needs.
This isn't an ad for the Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing Company but I have tried the low budget alternatives. They all look sort of the same but sadly most aren't as good. So I pay the wee fiscal premium and use the name brand product exclusively. I can't afford tape failure during critical installation procedures. Blue tape stat cabin boy.

But wait there is more, add a folded paper towel and you get an instant bandage with a designer blue cover. Use it to protect areas from jigsaws and other cutting implements.
It's durable and waterproof enough to cover holes for short periods of time. Because it doesn't leave any residue behind it's perfect for sealing the ends of hydraulic hoses before you drag them through the nether regions of the boat. When I refer to nether regions on a boat I'm not using the Urban Dictionary definition. This is just so you don't get the wrong idea and then can't unsee it.

As inexpensive as paper is, it's made to very exacting tolerances. Out of the box the 90 degree corners are as accurate as any square you can buy. With one quick fold you can get a 45 degree angle. That quick 45 degree angle fold does another interesting thing. You now have a square that is 8.5" on a side. The diagonal is almost exactly 12" (12.02). This give you the basis to make a fairly accurate ruler. We have some numbers available to work with. 12" and 6 inches. Fold the 6" in half and we now have 3". We also have 11" you can subtract from 12" to get 1". Take the 3" and subtract 2.5" and you now have .5" and you can easily get to a .25 measurement and so on.
Okay this doesn't beat a tape measure by any means for speed, but if you don't have one with you.... you can get a good idea quickly for a panel that's going to cover where a MFD lived its life or the ilk. It's an in situ MacGyver sort of thing.

There are more tricks you can do with the basic geometry you learned in elementary school and then promptly filed away in your mental shredder.
As a last personal note I'm acutely aware that my posting rate has precipitously plummeted and I'm trying to correct this. A combination of deadlines for others, an unprecedented increase in my day job installation work, and Signal K activities have made tending my favorite writing project difficult. I will strive to do better in the future.
