Design 2236 Morning Cloud IV
Here is the final Morning Cloud designed by S&S for Sir Edward Heath. This particular yacht was launched the year following his term as Prime Minister. I was in England about 8 years ago with Olin Stephens and met him. We were down in Portsmouth at the Royal Naval Club and Sir Heath, who must have been 80 years old at the time, came down to pay his respects to Olin. It was touching to see two men so involved in different sides of yacht racing in their day saying hello after so many years. Here's an image from that time.
Olin Stephens & Sir Edward Heath
The design brief was to produce a boat with the minimum amount of joinery in order to save weight, a high ballast/displacement ratio, tall rig with high aspect ratio, running backstays and mid stay to support the lightest rig possible and an efficient layout for skipper and crew all to produce a boat with the best possible performance in ocean racing conditions.
Allday Aluminum, Ltd built the hull and deck and Camper & Nicholson, Ltd finished her. Both yards were located in Gosport, England. She was launched in 1975.
Here are the plans.
